Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare

Scalp Micropigmentation aftercare plays a vital role in how sharp and durable your results stay. The days immediately following a SMP session are considered the critical settling phase where the pigment starts stabilising and the scalp starts healing. During this period, the scalp is hyper sensitive and even small mistakes can lead to uneven results or premature fading.

Proper Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare helps the results shine to their fullest extent and ensure long-lasting outcomes. The SMP after care routine is relatively simple and doesn’t take much time. By following them diligently, you can ensure a healthy scalp recovery and natural looking results.

Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare – The Necessity

Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare refers to the scalp care routine typically lasting up to 30 days, after each SMP session. The first 7-10 days are critical to facilitate seamless outcomes and quickened healing. But then, each day is significant and erring on proper aftercare can lead to

  • Uneven pigment settling
  • Patchy or faded areas in scalp
  • Need for corrective sessions

The basic goal of an aftercare routine is pretty simple – to minimise friction and irritation. A well-defined aftercare routine will

  • Allow pigments to stabilise and settle
  • Guard your post-procedural sensitive scalp
  • Facilitate the healing process
  • Ensure the best outcome and long-lasting results

Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare – A Handy Checklist

Your SMP technician will advise you on proper Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare routine. Follow your SMP practitioner’s advice as his aftercare instructions are tailored to your specific needs and treatment specifics. This routine should be followed after every SMP session to ensure your scalp is well-maintained and supple for the next session.

Critical Healing (Day 1-4 post procedure)

SMP is a pain-free procedure, and you can resume your regular routine. The vital prerequisites for proper scalp care and long lasting results are keeping your scalp free from sun-exposure, chemical products, and moisture. Here is a handy checklist to keep in mind for meticulous Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare.

Avoid water & sweat

Moisture can disturb the healing pigments and lead to patchy results and infections. Keeping the scalp dry is crucial in the initial days.

  • Do not wet or wash your scalp for atleast four days after your treatment.
  • Use a full cover shower cap while bathing.
  • Stay away from heavy exercises that might induce excessive sweating. Light exercises are just fine.
  • Avoid hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, swimming pools, open air events etc.
  • Avoid hats, helmets, or tight headwear.
  • If there is a need to venture out, wear a loose hat – this ensures breathability, friction-free comfort, and sweat avoidance.
  • Use clean pillowcases and ensure even air circulation.

Avoid Direct Sun Exposure

During the first 4 days, the scalp is in the most delicate healing phase. It is imperative to protect the scalp from sun exposure.

As heat raises skin temperature and opens pores, the freshly implanted pigments can migrate out of place before they settle in. Direct sun exposure also increases sweat and leads to uneven or patchy and delayed healing. The SMP pigments which are specially formulated to suit the hair follicle colour, are highly vulnerable to UV rays.

Avoid Touching & Picking

Mild soreness, redness, itching are common in the initial post SMP period (generally subsides in couple of hours). Resist the temptation to scratch, rub, or touch your scalp. As the scalp is hyper sensitive during this period, even slightly touching the scalp can trigger infections as our hands might have bacteria.

If the itching gets unbearable, gently pat with a clean tissue or press the itchy spot with thoroughly cleaned fingers. Resist the urge to pick on scabs that appear as part of the natural healing process. Do not apply lotions or creams to soothe the itchiness or redness.

Gentle Care (Day 5 – 10 post procedure)

Scalp Cleanse

You can resume cleaning your scalp around day 5. Please take care to use only lukewarm or room temperature water and mild sulphate free shampoo. Ensure not to scrub or exfoliate your scalp. Do a gentle massage and rinse immediately – do not soak your head. Avoid power showers or hot saunas for 30 days.

Once cleaned, pat dry with a clean towel. Take care not to rub the towel roughly. If you want to shave your scalp at this point, avoid razors and use a mild foil shaver.

Moisturise Regularly

Keeping your scalp soft and supple is critical for durable results. Moisturise your scalp thrice a day with a mild fragrance-free lotion to keep your scalp from drying out or flaking.

This is especially important to keep your scalp soft for the next session. Failure to do so will harden the scalp skin and prevent the SMP needles from penetrating in the next session.

Take care to avoid creams with active hair-growth ingredients like minoxidil. While moisturising, handle scabs carefully and don’t pick on them. They will shed naturally on regular moisturising.

Stay alert

From day 5, as part of the healing process, the scabs start to flake off and peeling occurs. The pigment might look faded and uneven (patchy) for a few days. Fret not, for this is absolutely normal and will smoothen out in a few days.

However, if proper aftercare is not followed, it might trigger infections. If you face persistent redness, painful swelling, severe burning, uncomfortable throbbing, pus, or fever, consult your SMP practitioner and seek medical attention immediately.

Regular Care (Day 11 – 30)

You can resume normal activities from day 11.

  • Normal washing and shaving can resume. Yet, stay away from harsh chemical based shampoos and AHA (Alpha-hydroxy acids) exfoliants.
  • Follow the moisturising routine with due diligence.
  • Resume normal activities and workout routines.
  • If using hair care products, opt for non-greasy formulations that won’t clog pores or affect pigments.
  • Use a sunscreen with SPF 30 (or higher) when you venture out in the sun.
  • If shaving is deemed necessary, use a foil shaver.
  • Stay hydrated to keep the skin supple.
  • Avoid chlorinated swimming pools, sea water, saunas, and heavy workouts.
  • Avoid tanning beds. Tanning bed lights can affect the scalp and speed up fading.

When Does Aftercare End?

Though 30 days is considered the normal timeline for the pigment to settle in and your scalp to heal, every individual is unique and might have different healing timelines. Typically, the scalp micropigmentation aftercare ends (and long term maintenance routine starts) when,

  • Your scalp feels normal to touch
  • The scalp sensitivity disappears
  • The flaking stops
  • The Pigment appears settled with a natural colour

Scalp Micropigmentation aftercare decides how well the SMP results hold up. Mindful aftercare doesn’t take much time. By making proper scalp care a daily habit, you can enjoy a long-lasting natural appearance and boost your confidence.

Each healing phase is unique, and the care you provide plays a big part in ensuring pigment retention and healthy scalp recovery. By following the instructions detailed above, you give your scalp the ideal environment to heal without disruption. Basic yet consistent efforts help prevent premature fading and reduce the need for frequent corrective services. Patience and commitment are the core prerequisites for long-lasting outcomes.
